Food, BBQ and fun
The popular Laurie Hillbilly BBQ Cook-Off is back for its 19th year in a row. Last year 78 entries by contestants from six states competed. The event is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, and this year, they are also expecting a team from Britain, according to Parks and Events Coordinator Susann Huff.
Scheduled for Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6, the theme will be "Chicken Picken BBQ."
For the general public, food vendors will be open as well as the Happy Holler Beer Garden. Most public-related activities are taking place on Friday.
The Good Sam Club BBQ Band will be playing in the beer garden, which will be open from 7-11 p.m. Friday night. The annual free chicken wing sampling, sponsored by G2M Supermarket and cooked up by contestants, will be held in the beer garden from 6-8 p.m. — or as long as they last.
The fairgrounds famous Buck-A-Duck races will also be held during the event. In these races, you purchase a chance for one or more rubber duckies to win a race on the stream through the fairgrounds at the waterwheel.
More than $7000 will be awarded to winners from first to 10th place. The grand champion will win $1,500 in cash and a banner. A trophy award will be given to the top scouring local team, a Showmanship Award, which is free entry for next year's event, will go to the contestant who best decorates according to theme.
Raffle items include a gas card and cash.
The Kid's Q Contest will be separated out into two age groups: 5-10 and 11-15 years of age. Watching and judging will start at 9:15 a.m. Adult judging will start at 12 p.m. At approximately 4 p.m., the cash prizes, trophies, ribbons and certificates will be awarded to the winners in Happy Holler.
All Kansas City Barbecue Society rules apply. The winner of this contest will be invited to go to the American Royal and is entered in the Jack Daniels contest lotto.
