A small resort with a big impact
Lindy and Weldon Steinmann outside Dogwood Acres Resort.
There is a place on the 10-mile marker called Passion Point. The concrete pad overlooking the Lake is well known as a place families gather for cookouts and a great place to watch fireworks displays on holiday weekends. But to Lindy and Weldon, it has more meaning. The couple was married on the point in October 1998, just months after purchasing Dogwood Acres.
"We had a string quartet playing lakeside, while fishermen trolled by trying to figure out what was going on," Lindy says.
The couple had moved out of the "big city" to be closer to Lindy's parents, who live in Columbia, Mo. They looked for about a year before coming across the 14-cottage resort.
"It just felt right, then, and it still does today. This is the kind of place that we would want to stay if we were vacationing at the Lake," she said.
QWhat is the appeal of a small resort?
AWith all the changes going on, not only at the Lake of the Ozarks but the world in general, it becomes even more important for the traditional family oriented resorts to maintain. In a time of two-income families and more and more activities after school and on weekends, being able to sit around a dinner table and discuss the day’s activities and make plans for tomorrow is becoming a lost feature of family life. We believe that a week or two at a place like this helps to restore some of those lost experiences.
QWhat is so special about your job?
AOne of the reasons we love being in the resort business is that we have the most beautiful office from which to work. We know that what we offer here is important to so many families and we enjoy seeing them grow from year to year.
There is no typical day – that’s another reason we enjoy this place. Lindy cleans and takes care of the office, Weldon rents the boats, can fix anything and keeps the pool crystal clear.
QDescribe your most memorable guest?
AOur most memorable guests are the ones that catch their first fish, get up on water skis for the first time and learn to swim. The smiles on their faces are as unforgettable as these memories will be for them.
