Doghouse Daddies: Blues with a bite
Provided
Doghouse Daddies was formed from the remnants of another band in 2004. The four-member band regularly performs around Lake of the Ozarks, giving audiences what they like to call “blues with a bite.” Inspired by musicians like Delbert McClinton, Freddie King and Willie Dixon, vocalist Bill Morlan has been performing for 40 years. “I was lucky to have a teacher who was intuitive enough to throw out the books and help me develop my ability to play by ear. The rest was just playing as much and as often possible,” Morlan says. He has played with various groups, at times sharing the same stage with legendary artists such as BB King, Joe Bonamassa and Tommy Castro. Five years into performing with the Doghouse Daddies, Morlan says playing with talented and experience musicians makes gigs fun and relaxing. When the band formed, they wanted to have an edge no other band around the Lake had.
“We wanted to give it a bit of a bite, if you will, making it a little more rock-edged and swingy,” Morlan said. They coined the phrase “blues with a bite” and began putting their special stamp on songs. The band represented the Lake of the Ozarks Blues Society at the 2007 International Blues Competition held in Memphis. In 2008, they were finalists in that same competition, making the top 10 of the more than 200 bands that played. The band was in the running once again in 2011. They have a number of reoccurring gigs in Kansas City, Memphis and Indianapolis. At Lake of the Ozarks they are can often be seen at Shorty Pants, Dog Days and Mexicalli Blues. Morlan enjoys taking the stage not only because his counterparts have the same love of music. He jokes it's the one time he doesn't have to answer the phone. “I enjoy seeing folks forget their problems for a while,” Morlan said. “It feels good to help people have some fun.” Compiled by Charis Patires.
